Getting Started

These are all questions that we hear asked just about everyday from Newbies world-wide and I just thought I'd share some of my thoughts on what has worked for us.

How do I get started in the adult internet business?
1. Attend a
Trade Show and network with fellow webmasters.
2.
Be an active participant in the numerous adult webmaster message boards, forums and news groups.
3. Buy a domain name.
4. Select a hosting service.
5. If you are a hot babe over 18 years of age click here for modeling opportunities.
If you are a guy...try to get a girlfriend that's very open minded and hopefully she'll go into porn. ;->

How much money do I need to get started in the adult internet business?
None really...You CAN start with sponsors licensing you the rights to use their pictures, videos and stories to build galleries and promote their programs and pay sites.  You can also get free adult hosting which will make up for buying a domain name and your on your way.  However, for as little as 8.95 - $35.00 per year can own a domain name and for as little as $9.95 - $24.99 you can get yourself a real hosting service.  This is not very much to pay to legitimize your business/site and will help with link lists and gallery submissions to obtain traffic to your first free site.

Should I go with a pay host or a free host?
As I stated earlier, you can always opt for a free adult hosting (which I do not recommend) thus relieving yourself any out of pocket cash for hosting and a domain name.  However, you do pay in other ways like giving up prime advertising space and usually some prime traffic! ;->  Pay for your adult hosting services except for some occasions when you may want to TGP with a free host.  As with buying a domain name, you not only legitimize your business/site but this will help get you listed with major link lists and other traffic sources to your free site.

What about content?
This is where a lot of people disagree with me.  I personally do not like building galleries and hate TGP traffic so I have not built any free sites with content in quite some time.  However, for those adult webmasters who REALLY want to offer content, there is always free content available to webmasters from just about every sponsor there is.  As well as traffic for content programs such as Pics4Clicks, which basically will license you the rights to use a specified number of the highest quality Suze Randall image sets and videos for every X number of clicks you send to suze.net.

There are also a vast number of content providers out there buying, selling and brokering content from any and every niche that you can imagine and a couple that you couldn't!  Pick a niche you know something about and that you enjoy somewhat.  This will make going to work everyday that much more enjoyable until the money starts rollin' in.

How do I get Free Traffic?
Nothing else really matters other than the quality of your traffic!  There are many ways to generate traffic and I will go over a few to get you started here.

1. Search Engines produce the best traffic, by far and one very good way to get search engine hits is to submit your site to Google .  Search engines such as AOL, Alta Vista, Lycos, Netscape, HotBot, and others take their data from DMOZ now.  DMOZ is a hand-edited directory, so SPAM is tossed.  But if you have a decent site which meets their guidelines, it will get listed.  You can go to the directory and read the category FAQ to get the basic guidelines.

Yahoo is another hand edited directory and a great source as far as getting traffic.  However, you have to pay and that does not even guarantee that you will be listed.  You may want to try their Business Express service which will at least give you a decision within a week.

One down side to working the search engines is that it can take 1, 2 or more months to be indexed before you start to see any traffic.  But this is the best traffic by far therefore IMHO it's worth the wait.  If you can't wait and still want search engine traffic, then try a pay for inclusion site such as Overture where you can bid on keywords and get listed with in days.  Overture feeds the search results for the likes of Yahoo, InfoSpace, Lycos, MSN Search, CNET Search, and Alta Vista.

2. Trade Traffic and Exchange Links with similar traffic sites.  Start by focusing on a keyword or phrase and perform a search for that term in Google and research the top listings for that term.  I recommend that you look at top 100 lists and sites with "Top Referring Sites" lists.  Start with the #1 listing in Google and look for a "Webmaster", "Traffic Trade" or "Link Exchange" link and request a link trade with that site.  Do the same with the top referring sites from the top search engine listings.  If they say no, or if they do not reply, what have you lost?  If they agree to a trade, then you have just increased your link popularity and your traffic.  But always remember that the more links you have up leaving your site, the more traffic leaks you have.  You need to monitor your trades and make sure that you trading traffic with the most productive sites that you can.  In order to track your trades properly you are going to need a Traffic Tracking and Trading Script.  You can find a great little free script with no programming experience needed called Clickzs, which will track raw and uniques in/out plus productivity of your trades and many more features.  BTW...You may also want to reward your most productive sites with better link placement and/or banners and thumb links.

3. Get listed on Adult Link Lists such as Richard's Realm, Persian Kitty and Greenguy.  These sites will usually have specific rules which must be met in order to get listed and usually require a reciprocal link back.  These lists tend to rotate daily listings as they are updated.  Getting listed could bring in a nice bit of traffic from the first day but traffic tends to dry up a bit as new sites are added to each list and your site gets rotated down on the list.  However, it is very helpful for link popularity and as long as your recip link stays up you should receive some hits.

4. Thumbnail Gallery Posts and  Picture Posts are extremely high traffic sites because they offer totally free images to there surfers.  Traffic from these sites is thus not the best as far as conversions go.  High traffic from TGP's and Pic Posts can lead to extra large bandwidth bills so be very careful if attempting to work this type of traffic.  You may be better off using these traffic sources to direct to your own sites or try using conversion free per click sponsors.

5. Top Lists sometimes called bad traffic recyclers, top 100 lists can never-the-less generate hits.  The more you send the list from your site, the higher you are placed on their list, and theoretically, the more hits you will receive in turn.  Traffic that you will receive thru top lists IMHO is not the best however I also believe that having your own top 10 list is essential to build up numbers and link popularity.  Many higher traffic sites in my experience will not even trade with sites unless they have a top referring sites list.

6. Start a "Top 10 Referring Sites" list on your sites.  This should be updated as often as possible and at least once a week...once a month is kind of pushing it but as long as you have the list and update it, your trades should be ok.  Updating can be done manually but if you put the little time and effort in Clickzs has this feature also.

7. Newsletters are sometimes over looked by the Newbie as well as the veteran adult webmaster as a source for traffic.  Start a monthly opt in newsletter with specials and exclusive content for subscribers as well as updates about your company/site.  This will help to build a customer base which leads to repeat business.  Do not send unsolicited e-mail or newsletters because that is SPAM!  To start you can get your own free opt in mailing list which will handle up to 500 members from Your Mailing List Provider.

8. Press Releases are a great way to let the world know what is new and exciting with your company/site for FREE.

9. Place "Bookmark Us" and "Make Us Your Homepage" links to each page on your site.  These enable the surfers to bookmark your site as well as show them how to make your site their homepage/start page.  Here is a simple code to make a bookmark button:

Add the following inside you <HEAD></HEAD> tags:

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="Javascript">
<!-- HIDE FROM OTHER BROWSERS
function addtofav(linkUrl,LinkName){
external.AddFavorite(linkUrl,LinkName);

// END HIDING FROM OTHER BROWSERS -->
</SCRIPT>

Then add the following inside you <BODY></BODY> tags where you want the button to bookmark your site to appear:

<FORM METHOD="get" ACTION="javascript:addtofav('http://www.yourdomain.com','Site Title Goes Here')"><font size="1">
<INPUT TYPE="submit" VALUE="Bookmark Us"></font></FORM>

Here is what the surfer has to do in order to make your site their homepage/start page with different browsers

Netscape Communicator 4.x

  • Click "Edit" on the menu bar at the top of the window.

  • Select "Preferences..." from the bottom of the pull-down menu.

  • Select "Navigator" from the left hand pane.

  • Click on the circle next to "Home Page" in the top right box.

  • In the "Home Page" box, type our URL (http://www.YourDomain.com/) in the text entry box.

  • Click OK.

Netscape 3.0

  • Click "Options" on the menu bar.

  • Click "General Preferences".

  • Select the "Appearance" tab.

  • In the "Startup" section, click the "Home Page Location" button.

  • In the "Startup" section, type our URL (http://www.YourDomain.com/) in the text entry box.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4

  • Go to our URL (http://www.YourDomain.com/).

  • Click on "View"

  • Click on "Internet Options".

  • Select the "General" tab.

  • Click the "Use Current" button under "Home Page" and then click "Apply".

AOL Web Browser

  • Add Starting Page as your start page by clicking "Preferences"

  • Change the Home Page location to our URL (http://www.YourDomain.com/).

Now www.YourDomain.com will be your home page.

Should I start with a pay site or a free site?
Never start out with a pay site!  LET ME SAY THAT AGAIN SO WE ARE STRAIGHT ON THIS....NEVER START OUT WITH A PAY SITE!!!  Take the time and minimal start up costs, which I pointed out earlier that it will take to learn this business.  Get involved, go to trade shows, start being active on the message boards that you find worthy of your presence and actually teach you something.  Then start generating traffic!  Check you server stats and learn where you traffic is coming from, where they entering and exiting you site, what search engines are sending you surfers for which search terms.  Learn your traffic before you venture into all the expense of a pay site and you will give yourself a chance to grow from there.  Build a down line of your own free feeder sites eventually leading like a pyramid to your best site and once you have 10,000+ unique visitors (mostly search engine traffic) per day AND you know your traffic and how to convert them to sales, you should think about a pay site.

Ethics and Adult Webmastering

What do ethics have to do with running adult web sites you may ask?

Everything as for as I am concerned!

Getting started in the business of adult webmastering comes with a lot of baggage, as some of you may know already. Not long ago being a porn peddler (which is really what adult webmasters are) was totally out of the question for the average person. You either had to be “connected” or a babe or you were S.O.L.

Today, the guy working nights at the local grocery store is shooting images of the girl from the car wash down the street and selling them over the internet on her own “amateur” pay site.  The 18-year-old kid you ran into at the bank yesterday is happens to be a computer wiz kid who is running 2 offices, 6 corporations and has 18 adult pay sites making him enough money to retire in 5 years.

Again you may ask, what do ethics have to do with running adult web sites?

Let me put it to you this way! The adult entertainment industry prior to the advent of the Internet and porn meeting was a very tight nit community. That is one factor that remains the same in the adult Internet industry today.  It may be true that just about anyone with the time, talent and a little money can make a great living in this industry.  But ask yourself this….can you make difference? Will you last long enough to be able to? Are you committed to ethical business practices in the day-to-day operations of your adult Webmaster business?

If so, then you are a SEX Webmaster and can proudly call yourself an honorary member of A Society for Ethical X-rated Webmasters(SM).

If you are not a SEX Webmaster, a couple of things that you may need to consider real soon if you haven’t already done so are:

1) Are you burning any bridges?

Or even worse:

2) Are you setting yourself up to be incarcerated?

Be aware, Be smart and above all BE ETHICAL!

Here is a list of things to consider when attempting to make a difference:

·Implement "Child Guard/Protection" services to insure NO MINORS ever have access to adult oriented materials AND help teach parents how to use them!

·Offer a link to our Adult Web Police(SM) area for the purpose of policing ourselves and to ensure that the taking part in trading and/or use of still and/or live streaming images representing, implying or depicting acts of Child Pornography, Incest, Bestiality, Rape as well as warez, passwords, MP3, or any site containing acts of violence no longer takes place online!

·Promote only ethical and legal business practices amongst in your day to day operations.

·Promote, encourage and implement ALL copyright, intellectual property and trademark laws as well as the use of only "legal" images, videos, etc.

·Promote only adult webmaster affiliate programs and sponsors that agree to disclose and honor any and all terms, arrangements made and/or promised with regard to payouts to all partners; do not to abuse the use of misleading blind links, consoles, or other deceptive practices.

· Promote only trusted free adult webmaster resources sites, affiliate ad programs, sponsors and links

· Agree to maintain a zero Spam tolerance policy!

February Search Engine Update

One of the shortest months of the year, February 2003 turned out to be the month of some of the biggest news in the search engine marketplace.  With Overture announcing this months their plans to purchase Altavista for the affordable price of $140 million dollars as well as to purchase FAST Search (AllTheWeb.com) for a measly $70 million in cash, portals are taking some heavy offensive and defensive positioning amongst themselves.

Portals are tearing themselves apart and buying pieces of one another and it has become obvious that in the search engine business it has only become harder to make and keep a profit for portal companies.  4 years ago Altavista would have been worth about 2 billion dollars during the inflated dot com boom.  Are Internet properties depreciating that quickly? Is one false move all it takes to go out of business?   All signs point to yes.

The Search Engine Garage Sale
In actuality, Altavista took a chance trying to compete in the portal game and lost focus on their search technology.  They waited too long to recover and lost relevance in their search results and users began to search elsewhere.  AOL is going through the same type of scenario with their broadband business, where they invested in the wrong direction.  Yahoo recently bought Inktomi for $240 million even though Inktomi doesn’t seem to be doing all that bad on their own.  AOL and Yahoo continue content partnerships with Google results as Google independently remains the strongest central point of search technology.  In 2002 Wisenut was gobbled up by Looksmart and Teoma went to Ask Jeeves the second they appeared to be a possible Google search technology competitor.  My next guess would have been that Fast/AlltheWeb will go to MSN, if MSN is serious about owning any real search technology, which in fact, they are.  But Overture got to FAST first and now MSN is left with the possibilities of acquiring Looksmart or AskJeeves.

Overture’s Plans to Overtake Google
The question on most marketer’s minds and on Overture’s shareholders minds is “Why acquire both AltaVista and Fast within 2 weeks of each other”?  Because they can? How about “because if they don’t, Microsoft will”, and sure enough, MSN is left with very few options to acquire their own search technology and crawler.  But spending $240 million in one month can’t be simply justified by the motive of keeping competitors at bay.  After Overture announced their bid to buy Altavista their stocks dropped about 20% the next day, shareholders shook their heads, but they may be laughing all the way to the bank in the coming years.  Overture has secured a formidable position and launch pad properties.  Staying alive and competitive in technology and user popularity is hard enough, keeping shareholders happy is a whole ‘other ballgame.  But there are many advantages to the purchase beyond playing defense.

Overture says it plans to use both FAST and Altavista as a place to beta test and conduct research on the new technology they have acquired and user interaction.   Along with the acquisition of Altavista, Overture also acquired over 50 patents on search technology, created more international partnerships, retains experienced programmers and engineers, customers, and market share.

In the past, FAST/Alltheweb.com has been expected to become a significant competitor to Google considering their index site, clean interface, and extremely relevant results.  Fast, which supplies paid inclusion and crawled search results for Lycos, completes the picture and more for Overture to become an “all inclusive” search engine technology provider and internet advertising company.  With paid inclusion, pay per click, and a crawled index, Overture could become a premier supplier and delivery mechanism for results and advertising on the web.  I hate to admit it, but they may be one step up on Google.  The key difference is that Overture in itself is still neither a “search engine” nor a portal.  Now that they have acquired 2 portals already established to do business under, they have no need to invest to reinvent the wheel, and now have property to call their own to sell advertising space on. Overture will simply take the best of all concepts and technology and blend them together to create the most competitive and comprehensive suite of search and advertising technology seen yet.

Google Blogs Up Cash
Google
still may be a step ahead in its own way.  Unfortunately their acquisitions are so “geeky” not many really understand what it mean right away.  This month Google acquired Pyra Labs, developers of Blogger.  According to
Blooger.com, a blog or weblog is “web page made up of usually short, frequently updated posts that are arranged chronologically—like a what's new page or a journal. The content and purposes of blogs varies greatly—from links and commentary about other web sites, to news about a company/person/idea, to diaries, photos, poetry, mini-essays, project updates, even fiction. Blog posts are like instant messages to the web.”  See Dave Barry’s BlogSpot as an example.

I think there is some incredible potential in the Adult Industry to use Blogging for traffic and marketing purposes, as well as for building communities.  It’s almost like a Peer to Peer network, without going through a software required network.  I feel that hosting a Blog network to be a great opportunity for adult webmasters and Industry companies.

Google finds this acquisition desirable in much the same way as when they acquired DejaNews, now Google Groups.  Google is focused on search and is interested in any technology that will either give them more information to access and index or more places to provide revenue streams and by increasing keyword based advertising opportunities.   The purchase benefits Pyra Labs as well, creating more space for hosting blogs and faster bandwidth speeds for users. I guess Bloogle may be the next step for this search champion.

Google Gets Search Technology Patent
For the past year, Overture has battled with Google regarding their keyword based ad serving technology claiming patent infringement.  Well score one for the good guys, on February 26 Google earned a patent for their web search and indexing technology!   Filed on Jan. 30, 2001, according to a summary of the patent, the patent deals with "an improved search engine that refines a document's relevance score based on interconnectivity of the document within a set of relevant documents".  Has Goggle just patented Link Popularity AND Relevance? According to an article at CNet “The invention could affect search companies that are building technology to intelligently rank Web pages in relation to search queries.  In the last year, Web search has become one of the hottest markets on the Internet. Many companies are furiously developing advanced tools and techniques that will index the Web more effectively and so, they hope, draw visitors.”  Read the full article here.

In Other News
MSN
has closed it’s beta testing of potential new changes for the portal including a very clean interface and much faster loading and response times.  Yes, they are trying to be more like Google; but who isn’t these days?  Although Yahoo! has purchased Inktomi, it doesn’t appear as if MSN is going to make any big “Powered by” result changes yet.  But I do expect to see some changes on their site to integrate the best features of their beta testing in the near future.

Altavista has enhanced and increased its multimedia searchable library to over 240 million files.  Some of the featured changes include larger images, more international image files, and better relevance sorting and indexing technology for images.  MP3, video, and other multimedia files are also available.  Altavista is indexing images based on the textual content surrounding the image, anchor links, and the image name itself. Guess what, this indexes adult images too once you turn off the adult content filter.  Since search engine optimization concepts (file names, alt tags, link target, surrounding text) are also commonly used with images, this could be a great way to get free traffic to your site as well … Softcore images only of course.  The images link to the page of origin, not to the image itself.

Flash files can be crawled by FAST and Google! “FAST is the first web search engine to support the Flash file format using the Macromedia SDK," said Tim Mayer, Vice President of Web Search at FAST. "This will increase the coverage of the FAST search index as well as making Flash sites visible to the end user via a search engine. This enhancement makes both the text and the links within the Flash file visible to the FAST crawler." (Source)  Google can partially index flash movies by most of the links embedded in the flash file.  This is great news as websites depend more and more on multimedia and dynamic content.

With more people on the Internet than ever, it would seem that traffic at every portal would have increased enough to sustain themselves, rather than treating one another like old ladies at a garage sale.  The great bargain hunt is on in 2003 and repositioning may begin to snowball. Once Yahoo makes a tangible change, I believe the others will follow suit.  For adult site marketers any major change or shift in traffic means a (hopefully temporary) drop in revenue.  Without more places to advertise, the demand will become more limited.  The masses need to be shown the way.

As we are learning, if you can’t build it buy it, and if you can’t advertise there buy a place where you can.  Where the adult market stands in all of this, who will accept our business, what options are left for marketing and advertising, is still a fuzzy picture.  As we roll into Spring and we sharpen up our talents and shape up for the summer, you have to wonder – who is standing up for our rights to traffic during all these negotiations?  I have a feeling there will remain plenty of opportunity for everyone.  If worst comes to worse, we still have our Google to depend on.

INTERNEXT : How was it for you baby?

Attending Internext for the big boys is just another walk in the park, but what about the smaller players and individual webmasters attending?

For those of you who can remember exactly where you were and what you were doing on the nights of January the 6th, 7th and 8th, congratulations, you’re already doing ok! For the rest of you, try and keep up!

This year’s Internext in Vegas was a good show in terms of “places to go, people to see...Networking and keeping up appearances was at a usual high for the show, and the mood was altogether pretty laid back.

As part of the TotemCash team and therefore among those who traveled furthest to be at this great event, I’ll be honest and say I preferred Miami, but that’s just my opinion. Jay from Ynotmasters already discussed in one of his issues last week some of the things that got to him at the show and I have to agree, there were a lot of things that were a bit of a pain. So before I get down to business, here’s my ten cents. I fell ill for two days (aw gee the poor guy!) because of the air conditioning in the center, am I alone? I mean, why do they feel the need to put it on maximum overdrive in January? Electric shocks from those nice carpets also played a part, as did overly loud music and running commentary from neighboring booths, which meant the rest of us had to shout when talking to webmasters etc. It seems companies can literally do what they want at their booths these days. Next year I’m bringing my trained team of transvestite elephants and monkeys, is that cool?

But hey, I’m not here to moan and groan about what I didn’t like. I also wanted to talk about attending Internext as a strategic business decision for companies and independent webmasters alike. Ready? Then let’s begin…

Attending Internext is just another run of the mill, everyday decision for the big boys of this industry. The budget is there, they just need a bit of organization and hey presto they’ve got themselves another flashy twenty thousand dollar booth! You add that to the cost of a Tradeshow booth space, plus all the other transportation, promotional and on-site costs and we’re already talking tens of thousands of dollars easily. But that’s the name of the game in this business, if ye got it, ye gotta flaunt it!

So, all this is very nice for the major players of the industry, but what about the smaller companies and the individual webmasters who want to attend? The financial resources just aren’t there to allow a “heavyweight” presence at the show, so what do you do? How do you go about letting people know that your company is as professional, trust worthy and potentially profitable as that big gorilla brand on the banner rotating high above the show floor? Don’t panic, it’s not as hard as it seems!

First things first, be prepared! Get some cool looking business cards. This is pretty vital if you want the bigger fish to take you seriously, and again, just good common sense but I still met many card-less folks in Vegas. And collect as many cards as you can, take down some quick points on the back of each one so you’ll remember who that name is and what you said to them. And if you can get cards with your picture on them, even better!

I also personally feel that if you’re well dressed, female or at least neat and tidy, I’m more inclined to listen to you with some interest, but maybe that’s just me being choosy.

Time management: give yourself enough time over the day or so you’re there to visit as many people as you can, or at least all those with whom you feel you can make some money with! Which brings me to my next point.

Talk to the right people: If your company or site has something going for it, like a new money-making idea that’s proven to work or a great service for a fair price then talk to those companies who’s activities and needs seem to match up with what you have to offer. Don’t waste your time talking with any dude who says he’ll make you a millionaire in a week with his cash program. Again it’s just common business sense!

Try and get invitations to parties: At most Vegas parties, there isn’t a lot of business deals being signed, sealed and delivered but that doesn’t mean you can’t chat and have fun with people you’re interested in doing business with. But with the free drinks flowing, try not to make too much of a fool of yourself, unless they do it first ;0)

Finally:  be friendly, interested but “aware” and don’t make promises you can’t keep!

Later people!

Making Chat Boards work for you!

Wanna know the secret to building rock solid webmaster relationships?

Easy, just talk to them! With so many different top quality webmaster boards around today, there are no longer any reasons why you or your company should suffer from bad lines of communication.  Just think about it for a second. If your webmasters are smart, business minded folk, as most of them are, then they obviously spend at least one hour a day on a webmaster chat board somewhere out there in cyberspace.  The good thing is, the majority of us webmasters spend our time on the bigger ones like Ynotmasters, GoFuckyourself or PornoJunkies to name but a few.  Your presence on these boards is, in the long term, a very simple, yet extremely important daily communication strategy.

No honors degrees needed here, just good old-fashioned common sense. And I know what you’re going to say “I’ve tried that, but when I talk about my sites or programs I get accused of spamming”.  This is a popular problem encountered by zillions of adult webmasters, mostly newbies though, all over the adult net every day.  You have to look at it this way: Just think of the amount of different cash programs or sites people are offering at any one time, if everyone was trying to push their sites all of the time, no real communication, and therefore no real business could ever take place, you have to patient.  Even if your site or program has the capacity to blow away the competition, it doesn’t work like that. Webmaster chat boards exist for two main reasons; to chill out and just have a bit of fun with other people in the same line of business and as a place where we can ask questions and get information on stuff we need for our sites etc.  You will find that in a couple of days, when you start to get to know the other people who hang out regularly on the board, that advice, news or business proposals start coming from those people. Whether that be them helping you or vice versa, you’ll start chatting privately with them everyday on ICQ or whatever chat system you use. And you’ll find that because of your presence on the board in terms of comments or queries you made, that people respond offering help or proposing services.

After that it’s up to you as to what’s interesting or not for you or your company and don’t forget that Spam Boards exist too on almost every site, that’s where you can stick that Fat SPAM banner for everyone to see.  I guess at the end of the day you could say that chat boards are about building relationships, whether that be for business or pleasure.  Just remember when you get in there to be cool, say hi and just go with the flow, the rest will come naturally.
